The Mutant 4/3+ Chest Zip Full Wetsuit with Hood

The O'Neill Mutant is the wetsuit that adapts to the session. Its modular hood attaches quickly over the collar, so the same suit handles cold dawn patrols and warmer afternoon sets without a second purchase. Built on O'Neill's modular systems platform and finished with a chest-entry zip, the Mutant 4/3+ is tuned for the autumn-to-winter shoulder season in temperate waters.

Details

  • Neoprene / material: Constructed from O'Neill's TechnoButter neoprene compound, with recycled yarns blended into the fibre mix for improved stretch and thermal retention.
  • Thickness: 4/3mm layering — 4mm across the torso and core for warmth, 3mm through the arms and legs for unrestricted paddle and kick range. The “+” hood adds an extra barrier around the head, the area where heat loss is highest.
  • Modular hood system: The removable hood attaches to the collar via O'Neill's modular closure system so you can strip it off when the air warms up without losing the suit's watertight seal.
  • Stretch panels: TechnoButter stretch panels placed across the shoulders, arms and underarms to protect paddling range and reduce fatigue during long sessions.
  • Seam construction: Triple-glued and blind-stitched seams with critical taping to lock out cold water at the joins — the watertight construction expected from O'Neill's mid-to-upper tier.
  • Entry system: Chest (F.U.Z.E.) zip entry with a free-floating zipper panel and anti-flush barrier with drain holes for a secure, low-flush seal and easier entry than a back zip.
  • Durability: Reinforced panels at high-wear points and O'Neill's standard knee protection.
  • Care: Rinse in fresh water after every use, dry inside out away from direct sunlight, and avoid machine washing or tumble drying to preserve the neoprene and seam tape.

Fit & Size Guide

Manufacturer Size Chart (general O'Neill men's wetsuit sizing)

Size Height Weight Chest
S 170–175cm 65–72kg 92–97cm
MS 170–175cm 68–75kg 97–102cm
M 175–180cm 72–80kg 97–102cm
MT 180–185cm 72–80kg 97–102cm
L 180–185cm 80–88kg 102–108cm
LT 185–190cm 80–88kg 102–108cm
XL 185–190cm 88–96kg 108–114cm

Plain sizing runs shorter/narrower; the T-code variants (MS, MT, LT) mix the core of one size with the sleeve/torso length of a taller or shorter build. If you sit between two rows, size up for the hood-in-place fit if you plan to wear the suit in the coldest part of its range.

Water Temperature Guide

Thickness Typical Water Temp
3/2mm 12–17°C
4/3mm 8–11°C
5/4mm 4–7°C

General guideline — actual comfort range depends on lining, seams, and personal cold tolerance.

The suit should sit snug everywhere with no air pockets or gaps at the neck, wrists or knees — a well-fitted 4/3 is warmer than a loose 5/4. The hood should seal around the face without pressure points if you plan to wear it through winter.

FAQ

How do I choose between two sizes? Measure your height, weight and chest and match them against the table above. If you fall between two rows, size to the larger measurements across the chest and shoulders — a suit that is slightly loose in the torso will still flush less than one that restricts breathing. The T-code options (MS, MT, LT) exist for exactly this situation.

Will the 4/3+ keep me warm enough for winter? For water in the 8–11°C band the 4/3+ is the sweet spot; the “+” hood is what makes the difference at the cold end. Below about 7°C a 5/4 or 6/5 layer with boots and gloves is the better call.

Is a chest zip harder to get into than a back zip? Chest zip entry takes a little practice but gives a lower-flush, more flexible seal once on. Lubricate the zip pull with a silicone stick periodically and rinse the zip in fresh water after sea sessions to keep it running smoothly.

Does it feel stiff when new? TechnoButter neoprene softens noticeably after the first few sessions in the water. Wearing the suit dry for a few minutes at home and rinsing thoroughly will speed that up.
