The SantoLoco 5' Premium Surf Leash is already supplied here with an integrated edgeboards releash® system.

Self-releasing leash: It automatically opens when a load of approximately 30–35 kg is applied. After release, it can be mechanically/magnetically reclosed and reused.

The safest option when surfing in flowing water is to go without a leash. If you still choose to use one, the edgeboards releash® helps reduce the risk of being unable to free yourself underwater if the leash becomes caught on an object such as a branch or rock.

Even with a current exerting as little as 40 kg of force on the entire upper body, it can become impossible to bend against the flow sufficiently to release the leash at the ankle. For this reason, the safest approach in rivers and other flowing waters is to avoid using a leash altogether. However, many surfers prefer to use one, as it prevents them from having to swim after the board and allows them to pull it back against the current.

The edgeboards releash® is based on a safety buckle from FIDLOCK®, but it was not originally designed for surfing applications. The releash® system releases the magnetic connection at a load of 30–35 kg. In addition, the D-ring connecting the leash provides another predetermined weak point that opens at a force of over 50 kg.

It is important to note that even the use of the edgeboards releash® does not provide absolute safety. For example, if the leash wraps around the body, there may be no sufficient load on the ankle connection to trigger release.
